HEDP di sodium, Chelation Value: 280 also known as disodium etidronate or disodium salt of HEDP, is a chemical compound widely used as a scale and corrosion inhibitor in various industrial applications. It's an organophosphonic acid that effectively chelates metal ions like Fe, Cu, and Zn, preventing scale formation and corrosion in systems like cooling water systems and boilers.  Here's a more detailed breakdown: Key Properties and Applications:
  • Chelating Agent: HEDP di sodium acts as a strong chelating agent, binding to metal ions and preventing them from forming scale or participating in corrosion reactions.
  • Scale and Corrosion Inhibition: It's particularly effective in controlling scale formation (mineral deposits) and corrosion in industrial water systems, including cooling water systems and boilers.
  • Detergents and Cleaners: It's used as a builder and chelating agent in detergents and cleaning products to enhance their effectiveness, especially in hard water conditions.
  • Other Applications: It also finds use in textile processing (as a peroxide stabilizer and dye-fixing agent), electroplating (as a chelating agent), and oilfield applications (as a scale and corrosion inhibitor).
  • Stability: HEDP di sodium exhibits good stability under various conditions, including high pH, high temperatures, and even in the presence of chlorine.
Where it's used:
  • Industrial Water Treatment: Used in cooling water systems, boilers, and other industrial processes to prevent scale and corrosion.
  • Oil and Gas Industry: Employed in oilfield applications to inhibit scale formation and corrosion in injection water systems.
  • Detergents and Cleaners: Used as a builder and chelating agent in various cleaning products.
  • Textile Industry: Used as a stabilizer for peroxide bleaching solutions and a dye-fixing agent.
  • Electroplating: Used as a chelating agent in non-cyanide electroplating processes.
  • Paper and Pulp Industry: Used as a scale inhibitor and dispersant.
In essence, HEDP di sodium is a versatile chemical compound with a wide range of applications due to its excellent scale and corrosion inhibition properties, along with its ability to chelate metal ions.
